School Rules

EHCP Blog

Just seen this over in NFIS facebook group.

This was a huge reason I disliked secondary. It wasn’t the fact that I needed the toilet all day, it was that I know now how concerned I felt when I had my basic liberties removed by staff and rules.

I needed to trust those people.. I needed to feel safe, I was enjoying elements of school for sure, but when someone made a rule that didn’t make sense and felt unjust.. I would become defiant and non compliant.

I was testing them. I was trying to see how far I could push them.

When we try to control children, they stop trusting us. They start testing us. They want to see how far we will take it.

It’s a very hard re-focus for parents and educators, to allow more freedom and autonomy, but it’s the only way to begin to build more inclusive settings.
