A Little Oversharing

adhd parenting school holidays

This is one of those oversharing posts… bare with me..

So, it’s the summer holidays. I started adhd meds on Monday so I’m adjusting to a whole new me. In a way multitasking is my super power, so I’m feeling far more relaxed (which is weird as I’m basically taking lots of amphetamines) but I’m also feeling a bit lost. It will take time to adjust.

Normally, I’m what could best be described as ‘on it’. So feeling like I now have an ability to slow down and breathe a bit deeper is shocking to my system.

I can understand why I hear of so many children and young people who just find this sensation of medication too much to bare.

I’ve set the scene. Working, kids home and I’m flying like a kite 😂😂

So, the kids wanted to go on a train. I knew a train would be hard. I knew there would be challenges on the way home, dysregulation for more than one of my gang would be peeking after going out and doing ‘stuff’. But they wanted to try and so we went for it.

It had highs and lows. We actually had a good time for most part. Went to a museum, rushed around following my son who moves at 100 miles an hour 😂..

The train home was BAD. Bad bad bad. I knew as we entered the platform it would be hard, and it got worse. It was loud and embarrassing. People looked over.. they wondered why was I not parenting my child. Laying down the law.. making consequences for the bad language. Being a forceful parent. Putting my god darn foot down..

It didn’t seem the time to educate a train on the intricacies of supporting autistic PDAers.

We came home. We reset. We will live to see another day.

This is what we all have to keep on doing. Summer is hard, and for parents and children who experience barriers to attendance and SEND it can actually be easier than school term times 🙈

This is what makes life challenging, and also the greatest journey.

We just have to keep on keeping on. In the words of “We are going on a Bear hunt”.

“You can’t go over it, you can’t go under it.. You have to go through it..”

We are here for you if you need to rant, moan, tell us it’s not fair or you can’t cope.. We understand and we are here to listen.

Don’t ever feel alone.

Inbox us day or night.

Ps my kids all gave permission to share their photos. I always ask. 😀
